Routine cleaning
It may not strictly be considered maintenance but regular cleaning of cardio equipment is important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Members find it unacceptable to get onto dirty machines with sweat on them. Staff on the gym floor should wipe down the exterior of equipment, consoles, seats etc regularly in addition to a thorough clean daily. Members will also do this if encouraged by example and the provision of suitable materials e.g. cleaning products that are alcohol and ammonia free.
We suggest you schedule a quarterly maintenance clean on cardio machines to remove dust – it is one of electronics biggest enemies. Vacuum under motor covers and under the chassis. Always turn-off machines at the mains before undertaking any cleaning.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions but the following may also be helpful;
Treadmills
Daily/weekly

Due to their frequent use and electronic and mechanical complexity, treadmills are the most labour-intensive pieces of fitness equipment to maintain and service.

Clean the console, handrails, motor cover and deck and check the operation of the stop button.
Monthly

Turn off the machine at the mains; remove the motor cover and vacuum inside the motor compartment to remove dirt and dust. This helps stop friction and heat causing the motor to wear out prematurely.

If your treadmills are on a carpeted surface, vacuum underneath them to minimize the amount of dust and dirt that will blow up into the machine. Placing treadmills on rubber mats can help minimize the amount of carpet fibre that gets inside the machine.

For treadmills with an automatic wax lubrication system, be sure to check and clean the wax nozzle. For other treadmills, follow the manufacturer's specifications for waxing.

Check the belt tension and tracking, as loose belts can become safety issues.
6 Monthly

Depending on the amount of usage inspect the hardware (nuts, bolts), belt and deck for wear.
Ellipticals/cross-trainers
Daily/Weekly

The console and exterior, including the rails, on elliptical trainers should be cleaned.
Monthly

Depending on the manufacturer's recommendations, remove the cover and clean out the area surrounding the motor. Make sure the intermediate shaft belt is tight and centred.
6 Monthly

The hardware should be checked.
Upright or recumbent exercise bikes
Daily/Weekly

Clean the console, seat and exterior of indoor cycles. Check the seat attachment and pin hardware, the handlebars, the pedals and the crank arm. Tighten the pedals and handlebars as necessary.
Every 3 months

Clean and lubricate the pedal shaft and conduct an audible inspection for squeaks, grinds and any other signs of internal malfunction.
Stair climbers/steppers
Daily/Weekly

External cleaning should be undertaken for stair climbers. Inspect pedals and tighten as necessary.
Every 3/6 months

Check hardware and conduct an audible inspection. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for other maintenance, which will depend on the model's specifications (chain drive versus belt drive).
Rowers
Daily/Weekly

Clean the console, seat, handle, toe straps and rail on rowing machines. Tighten the handle and replace toe straps as necessary.
Every 3 months

Inspect the cable, belt or chain, the seat and seat hardware.
